When the Work reading is the right spread

The Work reading answers questions about your professional situation: whether to stay, why a project is stalling, what to expect from a move. It looks at the work rather than at the people around it — if the question is really about your relationship with your manager, take the Situation reading.

It works well when a decision is already in sight and you need to know its price. It works poorly when the question is really about money: income and work are not the same thing, and the spread will honestly show you the work rather than the wallet.

How to read the positions

The situation is how things actually stand, without your fatigue and without your hopes. Pentacles here mean the matter rests on a material footing and is stable; Swords mean there are many words around it and few results.

The obstacle is what is slowing it down. Notice whether it is internal or external: the Eight of Swords and the Devil speak about your own position, while the Five of Wands and the Seven of Swords speak about the environment and the people in it.

The outlook is where this arrives on the current course. It answers on a horizon of months, not years; for a year, take the year-ahead reading.

How to word your question

The best wording is concrete and time-bound: "what happens with my job in the next three months", "what is stopping this project from moving". "Leave or stay" is a choice spread, not a work spread.

A common mistake

The mistake is asking the spread for permission. If you have already decided to leave and want confirmation, the outlook card will be read as approval no matter what it is. A more useful question: what am I not taking into account.

A worked example

Situation — Eight of Pentacles. Obstacle — Four of Cups. Outlook — Three of Wands. The reading: the work is done well and solidly, what blocks it is your own loss of interest, and ahead is expansion beyond the old boundaries. So the problem isn't the place, it is the size of the task.
