What a personal arcana is
A tarot deck holds 22 Major Tarotari, from the Fool to the World. These are the cards of the big themes: choice, will, crisis, growing up, the close of a cycle. Your personal arcana links your date of birth to one of them through a simple sum.
It's worth being clear about what it is. An arcana does not predict events and doesn't describe your whole character. It points to a running theme — the thing you live through again and again in different circumstances. For one person that's boundaries, for another trust, for another letting go. The value is in the self-observation: the card gives you language for something that was only a feeling before.
A personal arcana is often confused with the life path number in numerology. The sum is similar, but the result is reduced differently: a life path number goes down to a single digit, an arcana down to the range 1–22. So the two almost never match. We wrote about the other method separately, in the piece on the life path number in numerology.
How it's calculated — worked through
Take the date 14 March 1990:
- 1. Add up every digit: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 27
- 2. The number is over 22, so add again: 2 + 7 = 9
- 3. The ninth Major Tarotari is the Hermit
If the sum reduces to exactly 22, that's the Fool, arcana zero: in tarot it is both the start of the road and its end. The calculator above does these steps for you and shows each one.

Frequently asked
How do I find my arcana from my date of birth?
Add together every digit of your date of birth. If the result is over 22, add the digits of that result again, and keep going until you have a number between 1 and 22. That number matches the Major Tarotari card with the same number. A result of 22 counts as arcana zero — the Fool.
What does a personal arcana mean?
It doesn't describe your fate or your whole character — it describes a running theme in your life: the thing you work through over and over in different circumstances. It's a foothold for self-observation, not a verdict and not a forecast of events.
How is a birth arcana different from a life path number?
The sum is similar but it's reduced differently: in numerology the number usually goes down to a single digit (or the master numbers 11, 22, 33), while an arcana goes down to the range 1–22, because that's how many Major Tarotari there are. So for any one person the two are almost always different.
Can an arcana change over time?
No. It's calculated from your date of birth, which doesn't change. What changes is how you live the theme of your arcana: at twenty and at forty, the same card reads differently.
Is the calculation free?
Yes, the calculator on this page is free and needs no sign-up. For a full reading of how the arcana shows up in your situation, ask Mira.
