The Celtic Cross is the most detailed of the classical spreads, ten cards deep. It suits one large theme that has to be seen from every side: a long conflict, a major decision, a situation with too many people and motives in it.
It is overkill for simple questions. On "should I message first" ten cards give you no more than one, and plenty of opportunity to get lost. A good rule: if you can describe the situation in a single sentence, you don't need the Cross.
