What a natal chart is

A natal chart is a precise snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born: where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood, by zodiac sign and astrological house. Unlike a daily horoscope, which is the same for everyone of one sign, a natal chart is yours alone — your innate inclinations, your strengths and the work ahead of you. Build it above from your date, time and place of birth and get the whole wheel with every position on it.

The big three: Sun, Moon and Ascendant

Where should a beginner start reading a chart? With the big three — the core of the personality, which already gives a substantial portrait:

  • The Sun — the essence of who you are, what you're moving toward and what you shine with;
  • The Moon — emotions, needs, your inner world and what makes you feel safe;
  • The Ascendant — the mask and the first impression: how people see you when they meet you.

These three often differ noticeably, and there's no contradiction in that: a person has layers, and their surface, their essence and their feelings can all differ. There's a full walk-through in the article “The natal chart: how to read it”.

The 12 houses: areas of life

If the planets are what happens and the signs are how, the houses show where — which part of life it shows up in most. Briefly: the 1st house is the self and appearance, the 2nd money and values, the 3rd communication and study, the 4th home and family, the 5th creativity and romance, the 6th work and health, the 7th partnership and marriage, the 8th crisis and transformation, the 9th philosophy and travel, the 10th career and standing, the 11th friends and goals, the 12th the subconscious and solitude.

The planets in a chart

The personal planets are felt most sharply: Mercury governs thinking and communication, Venus love and values, Mars energy and will. The slower planets (Jupiter, Saturn and beyond) say more about a generation and reveal themselves through the house they fall into. You can check basic compatibility by element on the compatibility page, and the mood of the day in today's horoscope.
