When the Express reading is the right spread

Past — Present — Future is the most universal three-card spread and the best first reading if you are just starting. It suits a situation already in motion, where you need to see the movement: where it came from, where it stands and where it is heading if nothing changes.

It doesn't suit choices between options, and it doesn't suit questions about another person — those need positions reserved for that person. What it is excellent at is the first look: do it, and you will know which spread to take next.

How to read the positions

Past is not biography, it is cause. Read this card as the answer to "where did this begin" and don't reach back further than a few months: three cards cannot carry your childhood.

Present is the most important of the three, because it is the one you can check. If it doesn't match what you see around you, the question was asked about a different situation and there is no point reading the other two.

Future is not prophecy, it is the line continued — what happens if nothing changes. A reversed card here usually means not disaster but that events will take longer than you are counting on.

Look at the combination separately. Three cards of one suit: the situation is uniform and predictable. Three Major Arcana: the theme is bigger than it looks, and a larger spread is worth taking.

How to word your question

The best input here is a name, not a question: "my situation with the move", "what is going on between us". A direct question narrows the spread toward yes-no and stops the cards from showing movement.

A common mistake

The beginner's mistake is reading three cards as three separate answers. This spread only works as a story: if Past, Present and Future don't add up to one sentence, the reading isn't finished yet.

A worked example

Past — Eight of Cups, Present — Two of Swords, Future — Ace of Wands. The story reads: you already walked away from this once, right now you are stuck in a non-decision and pretending there are no options, and ahead is a beginning that will require a first step from you rather than your agreement. One plot, three stages.
