When the Your situation is the right spread

The Situation reading is the workhorse for anything unclear: a conflict, a stalled project, a colleague behaving strangely, a question that won't move. Three positions — the heart of it, the obstacle, the advice — cover almost any everyday problem.

The only cases it doesn't suit are questions about another person's inner state (that is Feelings or Relationships) and choices between options. Everywhere else this is the first spread worth taking.

How to read the positions

The heart of the situation is not a description of events but what the story is actually about. A card here often redefines the question: you asked about money and the heart of it turned out to be recognition.

What blocks it is the obstacle, and it helps to read it by level. A Major Arcana card: something large is in the way and it won't resolve quickly. A Minor: a concrete practical thing, and you can name it in words. A court card: a person is in the way, and it is worth working out who.

Advice is read literally, as an action. If the advice card is unpleasant, that usually means you will have to act against habit — not that the advice is bad. The Ten of Swords as advice means "admit that it's over", and that is a workable instruction.

How to word your question

Describe the situation in one phrase with no question mark: "the dragging dispute with the contractor". This spread likes naming rather than asking — a name doesn't narrow its field.

A common mistake

The mistake is handing this spread a question with the answer already inside it: "how do I convince him to agree". Then the obstacle position answers your resistance rather than the situation, and the reading falls apart.

A worked example

Heart — Five of Pentacles. Obstacle — King of Wands. Advice — Three of Pentacles. The reading: the matter really is about a missing resource; what blocks it is your unwillingness to show you can't handle it alone; and the advice is direct — go into partnership and split the work. Three cards, one concrete decision.
