When the The love triangle is the right spread

The love triangle spread is for a story with three people in it: you, him and someone else. It doesn't matter who arrived second or whether the third person knows you exist — the spread looks at the whole construction, because these situations cannot be read one piece at a time.

It works for "he has a wife", for "she appeared between us", and for the case where the third person is an ex nobody let go of. It doesn't work when there is no triangle and the third person exists only in your anxiety: then the position comes out empty, and that is an answer too.

How to read the positions

You is your role in the construction, not your feelings. This position often lands uncomfortably: it shows what you are actually doing in this story — waiting, competing, rescuing or holding on.

Him is the person in the middle. Watch for stillness: the Two of Swords, the Four of Cups, the Hanged Man mean he is not choosing and does not intend to, and almost everything else in the spread follows from that.

The third person is read as a figure, not an enemy. What matters isn't what she is like but what position she occupies: the Empress and the Ten of Pentacles speak of solid ground, Pages and Fives of shaky ground.

What holds you together is the mechanics of the triangle. Usually the most explanatory card in the spread: it names the thing that keeps the construction standing even though everyone inside it is unhappy.

How it ends is the outcome given how all three of you behave now. Change your behaviour and this card stops being true — which is the good news in it.

How to word your question

Describe the construction, not the emotion: "me, Max and his wife". Don't ask "will he choose me" — that narrows the whole reading to the fifth position and wastes the fourth, which is usually the one that explains why the story has lasted for years.

A common mistake

A frequent mistake is reading the third person's card as a judgement on a rival. The spread describes her role in the construction, not her personality, and certainly gives you no grounds for conclusions about her as a human being.

A worked example

You — Eight of Wands. Him — Two of Swords. The third person — Ten of Pentacles. Holding it — the Devil. The end — the Tower. The reading: you are in constant motion and pressure, he is not choosing on principle, she holds the ground of family and daily life, all three are held by dependency and habit, and it ends abruptly and not by anyone's decision. The spread says it plainly: there is nothing to wait for, and waiting hurts.
