The astrological year begins not on 1 January but at the spring equinox — around 21 March, when the Sun enters Aries. That's why the list traditionally opens with Aries rather than Capricorn or Aquarius, even though the calendar year starts with those.

Aries (21 March – 19 April)

They're caring, intuitive and good at reading other people's moods. The flip side is being easily hurt and a tendency to retreat into the shell when stung. Their strength is depth of feeling and the ability to build a warm, protective home for themselves and those they love.

Leo (23 July – 22 August)

Fixed Fire under the Sun. Leos are generous, vivid and warm: they need to shine and to share that light. Born leaders and creators, they love a grand gesture, recognition and the chance to inspire. Pisces are the most sensitive and dreamlike sign: they perceive the world finely, are compassionate and creatively gifted, and often live half in reality and half in imagination. The flip side is blurred boundaries and a tendency to escape difficulty into fantasy. Their strength is deep empathy, intuition and the ability to sense what's hidden from others.

What to do if you were born on the cusp

Probably the commonest question after “what sign am I?” is “I was born on the boundary, so which one am I?”. This concerns people whose birthday falls on the last or first days of a segment: 19–20 April, 22–23 July, 22–23 September and so on. Popular astrology coined the word “cusp” for those dates, along with the appealing idea that such a person “combines two signs”.

The honest answer is this: at any given moment the Sun is strictly in one sign — there's no in-between state. You aren't “half Aries, half Taurus” — the Sun has either entered Taurus or it hasn't. But because the exact moment of transition shifts from year to year and depends on the time and place of birth, a calendar date alone can't settle the sign of a cusp-born person. Someone born on 20 April may turn out to be an Aries and someone else a Taurus, depending on the year and the hour.

So the only reliable method is to build a natal chart for the exact date, time and place of birth: it will show which sign the Sun was actually in at your minute. The three layers behind the date: element, modality, ruler

The element, modality and planet listed for each sign in the table aren't decorative labels but the three axes along which the signs genuinely differ.

The element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) describes the basic temperament — how a person lives their emotions. Fire is about action and enthusiasm, Earth about practicality and steadiness, Air about thought and communication, Water about feeling and intuition.
